Great American Steamboat Company has agreed to purchased the American Queen steamboat. Plans are to have her sailing again starting April of 2012. Voyages will leave out of Memphis, TN.
The former Majestic American Line’s ship was purchased for $15.5 million and will require an additional $5 million in updates in a drydock.
Here’s something interesting, the city of Memphis has put up $9 million to purchase the ship as a loan, which will be paid back by an $89/per passenger head tax over a 10 year period. That money is said to also be paying for the ship’s berth in Memphis.
