Reuters and the AP are reporting that Venetian officials have officially banned large ships [defined as over 96,000gt] starting next November.
The actual details are far less harsh. Ships over that amount can still dock in Venice, they just cannot sail down the main ship channel. It seems the port is developing a ‘back way’ to get into the port.
Starting January 2014, all ship traffic will be limited in front of Saint Marks Square.
