Some Thoughts from Today’s Cruise Ship Safety Hearing

  • Sen. Rockerfeller will introduce legislation to “close the tax loophole.” This isn’t a good sign. If passed, then this means prices will go up.
  • Carnival, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean will voluntarily post crime statistics of their ships on their websites.
  • Sen. Rockefeller then attached CLIA saying they made empty promises.
  • Apparently the senator compared “cruise ships to coal mines.” I’ve been on some ships that were coal mines but they were NEVER cruise ships.
  • It pretty much is, as one person described it, a personal vendetta of Sen. Rockefeller against the cruise lines. Does he realize that the cruise industry does nothing different than the rest of the maritime industry. They even have higher standards in certain places.
