Obligatory Liberty of the Seas Comment

If you been checking out the other cruise sites lately, I’m sure you read about the Liberty of the Seas ‘near collision’ (as CruiseCritic puts it) with a small Italian fishing boat. It gained pretty quick attention and was used as another way to smear the industry by a bunch of ‘experts’ that never sailed a day in their lives.

Under the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972, the International Maritime Organization set out traffic rules dubbed COLREGS. One of these rules is that the smaller motor vessels must yield to the larger motor vessels.

Now I’m no Naval Architect, but I’m pretty sure no fishing boat is the size of the Liberty of the Seas. For a reference, the Liberty is part of the Freedom Class vessels. We’re talking 154,407 grt!

Liberty of the Seas has no, if any, responsibilities in this matter.
