Harmony of the Seas

The world’s largest cruise ship, Harmony of the Seas, has now been delivered to Royal Caribbean. In our series of First Looks, which replaces the Inaugural Liveblogs, lets take a look and see what makes her the worlds largest.

Harmony is classed at 227,700gt. This makes her the largest cruise ship ever. Her sisters, Oasis and Allure both come in at 225,282gt and Allure is technically 5cm longer than Oasis. The increase in gross tonnage comes from her hull area being 7 ft longer and 9 ft wider on either side. Harmony has 2,747 staterooms and suites. That translates to 5,494pax at double occupancy.

Some background on Harmony

Oasis and Allure were built in Finland and ordered as a pair back in 2006. When Royal Caribbean went to order another 2 oasis class ships, they were unable to get the export credit from the Finnish government. This forced them to switch to the sister yard, STX France. That’s why Harmony and her sister will be built in France. The design is identical to Oasis, Central Park, Boardwalk and the Royal Promenade, however there are some key changes with Harmony.

New addition to the class, Splashaway Bay

The 25th ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet has some new additions to Royal Caribbean as well as some concepts borrowed from the Quantum class.

  • A 100-foot drop with The Ultimate Abyss, the tallest slide at sea, plunging riders 10 stories down from deck 16 to the Boardwalk on deck 6.
  • 2,150 tons of water in 23 swimming pools, whirlpools & two FlowRider surf simulators.
  • Waterslides, including the Perfect Storm, a thrilling trio of waterslides, and the Ultimate Abyss.
  • Splashaway Bay waterpark for young guests.
  • The main Broadway show onboard will be Grease.
  • 20 dining venues with newcomers to Oasis class including Wonderland and Jamie’s Italian.
  • Another new feature taken from the Quantum class is the Bionic bar.
  • Harmony will feature cabin layouts and designs from the Quantum class. Passengers have commentated how they preferred the layouts of Quantum cabins as opposed to Oasis’.

After she departs the yard in France she heads to Southampton, England first series of preview cruises. After that she will go down to Barcelona and spend the summer cruising around the Mediterranean on 7-night Mediterranean cruises. In late October she will sail a 13 night transatlantic cruise from Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale. She’ll homeport in Fort Lauderdale for the foreseeable future sailing 7 night Eastern and Western Caribbean routes. An interesting note, her Eastern Caribbean routes now sail to Puerto Rico instead of St Maarten.

I’ll update this post to include photos of her Interiors when they are posted. This will most likely happen when she does her preview cruises in Southampton. Make sure to check back.
