[First Look] Holland America’s Koningsdam

Holland America’s newest flagship, the 99,500gt Koningsdam, will depart on her maiden voyage from Civitavecchia today. As she sets sail, lets take a look at this brand spanking new ship.

Holland America Line celebrated the delivery of Koningsdam at the official Handover Ceremony, luncheon and shipyard workers party. This all took place where she was built, at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy.

The handover ceremony was jam packed with executives including, Italian ministers, the CEO of Fincantieri, chairman of Carnival Corp Micky Arison, the CEO of Carnival Corp Arnold Donald, the CEO of Holland America Stein Kruse, and the President of Holland America Orlando Ashford.

Orlando Ashford:

“The Official Handover Ceremony was a celebration of the years of planning and hard work that went into building our gorgeous new ship and a chance to honor all those who made this day possible. Thank you to Fincantieri for being an exceptional partner. We look forward to beginning work soon on our second Pinnacle-class ship scheduled for delivery in late 2018. ”

Koningsdam’s official naming ceremony will take place in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, May 20.

About the Ship

The Koningsdam is the first in the Pinnacle class of ships. This is an evolution of the popular Vista class ships that Carnival and Costa debuted. The Vista evolved into the Signature class (including the Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam). The signature class evolved into the Pinnacle class of which the Koningsdam is the first of.

The highlight of the ship is easily the World Stage. It’s a new theater design that allows the audience to almost sit all the way around the stage. There’s a 270-degree LED screen that’s 250ft long.

Interesting fact. The ship is named after Willem-Alexander, the first King of the Netherlands in over a century. King is ‘Koning’ in dutch.
